From 28 February 2026, specially trained South Australian GPs can assess, diagnose, treat and prescribe medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children 8 years old and above, as well as adults where clinically appropriate, without needing to make a referral to a psychiatrist or paediatrician.
ADHD is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterised by difficulties with attention, hyperactivity and impulsivity that can impact on day-to-day life. Up to 8% of Australian children and up to 5% of Australian adults have ADHD.
This service improves access to ADHD care, allowing more people to be assessed for ADHD and receive treatment sooner.
